There’s no denying that living on your own is exhilarating. For the first time in your life, you get to call the shots. But when the laundry starts to pile up and your bank account begins to dwindle, you may start to realize that living on your own isn’t always fun and games. Before you panic, we’re here to tell you that there are plenty of ways to make living on your own a bit easier!

1. Learn before you move out.

If you haven’t yet moved out of your house, now is the time to learn everything you can about running a household. Ask one of your parents how to do laundry, run the dishwasher, and how to keep important files organized.

2. Stick to (somewhat of) a schedule.

Having some form of a routine will keep things from piling up. Set aside one or two days a week for:

  • Straightening up around the house.
  • Vacuuming and dusting.
  • Doing laundry.

3. Create a budget for yourself.

Not only are you managing a home now, but you’re managing your budget as well. Stick to our tips for financial success and you’ll be set in no time!

4. Bring the comforts of your old home to your new home.

Whether you live five minutes down the road or on the other side of the country, everyone is bound to get homesick from time-to-time. Combat this by taking some of your favorite things from home, like throw pillows or a framed picture, with you — just make sure you have your parents’ permission first!

5. Brush up on your handyman skills.

While you certainly don’t have to learn how to repair major problems around your home, knowing how to tackle smaller problems, like fixing a leaky faucet or unclogging a drain, can make you feel independent. Plus, it saves you the cost of having to hire someone for the job.
