Are you looking for some family fun this weekend? Consider heading down to the Long Island Children’s Museum Theater in Garden City this Friday, March 28, for a showing of “Aesop’s Fables.” But this performance isn’t going to be like any other performance. This rendition of “Aesop’s Fables” is unique due to its “autism-friendly” character.  According to Newsday, this live performance has been adapted to create an environment that caters to the needs of those on the autism spectrum.

In order to create an atmosphere where those with autism and other sensory sensitivities can feel comfortable, sound and light levels will be regulated throughout the performance. Additionally, a room neighboring the theater will be designated as a “quiet room” where audiences can go if they need a break.  Suzanne Reek, president of the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America, explains that these modifications will allow participants and viewers to enjoy a live performance in an environment where they can feel safe, supported and free of judgment.

This Friday’s performance will feature classic stories such as “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” but with an exciting twist. To prepare audiences for what they can expect, a downloadable “social script” is available here. It is designed to take children through the process of attending a live show and hopes to reduce any anxiety that show goers may experience.
