“Where’d the day go?” — it’s something most of us have asked ourselves after a busy day.
Unfortunately, time is the one thing we can never get more of, no matter how hard we try. But while you may not be able to add hours to the day, there are ways to better maximize the 24 you’re given.
Assign a Priority Factor to each Task
Take a look at your to-do list for the week — is everything important and urgent? Probably not. Rather than trying to accomplish things in a random order, pick out the three or four tasks that are most important or timely, and work on them first.
Set Time Aside
Having an “I’ll get to it when I can” mindset is one of the major reasons why things never seem to get done. Rather than waiting around until you feel like doing something, set aside a designated time to work on it.
The time you set should also fall between general work hours — 9-5pm. Should you need to go to the library, call tech support, or run to the store for supplies, you’ll be happy you didn’t wait until midnight to get started.
Avoid Distractions
Speaking of setting time aside, you should also “set space aside.” Sure, your living room is convenient, but it’s also filled with people talking and a loud TV. If you’re easily distracted, find a space that best suits your needs.
Don’t Try to Multitask
Multitasking seems like a great idea, afterall who wouldn’t want to get three things done at once? But unfortunately, that’s not actually what happens when you multitask.
Numerous studies show that when people try to multitask, it actually takes them longer to accomplish each goal.
