When the temperature is in the single digits and snow covers the road, it can be tempting to hide under a blanket all day watching TV and playing on the computer. While that may be okay to do once or twice over the summer, a sedentary lifestyle can have major effects on your physical health, mood, and life.

If you’re getting antsy and feel like there’s nothing to do during the colder months, we’ve got some advice.

Pick up a book.

A real, paper book that is. Though we have nothing against tablets, we suggest getting your eyes away from screens entirely. If you’re not big into reading, ask a friend to join your book club. Each week or month, get together (even if it’s just over the phone) and discuss your favorite parts.

Call someone.

When was the last time you had a good, old fashioned phone conversation with someone? Texting may be convenient, but talking to someone helps improve your speech and reasoning skills.

Get a job.

Looking to make a little extra money? Many small stores need part-time help during the winter.

Focus on your mental health.

Did you feel stressed out during the summer and fall? Winter break is an excellent time to focus on mental health. Learning more about yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises can help you now and later in the year when school and/or your job starts back up again.

Take a look at your finances.

Do you know how much you spend in a given day, week, or month? More importantly, what are you spending money on? If you can’t answer these questions, you should spend a day breaking down your expenses and try planning for future savings.
